The Moccasin dates back to the 17th Century American Indians who wrapped heavy hide around their feet to create a primitive but effective foot covering. The modern Moccasin offers superior comfort and differs only in the addition of a sole unit. As a mark of authenticity, the forepart is attached by a single row of stitching – not bonded as with a conventional shoe.
As a mark of authenticity, the tubular upper leather construction will always remain attached to the sole because of the re-inforced stitching securing the two components. For comfort, there is no inner sole in a Moccasin, just the simple leather envelope constructed in the way the Red Indians did over 400 years ago. The original Moccasin was comfortable and durable, and at Watson Shoes, this tradition is maintained with one of footwear’s oldest and most classic designs.
Grasshoppers Moccasins remains the signature brand of Watson Shoes and enjoys significant popularity among the young and not-so-young. The first Grasshoppers shoe was manufactured in 1966. To date, in excess of 12 million pairs have been produced. It remains one of South Africa’s most popular footwear brands and is considered to be one of the most comfortable shoes ever made.
